10 Things You’re Doing Wrong on Social Media

More often than not people use social media as an excuse to say whatever they want regardless of what other people think. While I’m all for the freedom of expression that is the internet, there are some people out there who really might want to think about toning it down a bit. Here are 10 things you’re doing wrong on social media:

#1. Using it as a personal diary to broadcast instead of engage:

Look I get it. You’re going through a lot and you need an outlet to express what your feeling. If this is the case, then there are certain places you can express this on a more conducive platform (blogs, tumblr, etc.). As annoying as it may sound, social media is all about interaction and if you’re constantly broadcasting what’s going on instead of trying to create a conversation you’re bound to lose followers.

#2. You don’t update at least semi-regularly:

I’m not saying you have to post every hour or even every day, but if the last thing you’ve posted was from St. Patrick’s Day, 2013 you may want to start updating a little more regularly.

#3. You only retweet or repost:

Wow is this annoying. We all love a good tweet that we can relate to, but sometimes you’ve got to have your own original idea. If all you’re doing is reposting other people’s content you’re not really engaging in social media on a personal level, and isn’t that the point?

#4. You follow people you hate:

Why why why why whyyyyy do people do this? That ex you still follow? The girl from high school you couldn’t stand, but stayed social media friends with for the sake of keeping the peace? Yeah, you’re never going to talk to them again and you don’t need to keep them in your friend list. Delete them, now.

#5. You use it as your only source of news:

While I understand that attaining information about depressing shit going on in the world isn’t at the top of everyone’s to-do list, if you’re going to have an opinion on something you simply can’t only rely on social media for your information. Finding other sources is imperative towards getting people to take you seriously. So pony up and do your research.

#6. You use it to tell people how cool you are:

Granted, we all love to brag and I’m all for pride posting. However, if all you do on social media is tell people how awesome you are all of the time, it’s going to get annoying pretty quickly. Sprinkle in some other aspects of your life and don’t be afraid to not be cool all of the time. Believe it or not, people like a little honesty and vulnerability.

#7. You don’t edit before posting:

From the most basic typos to straight up misinformation, please for the love of all that is good and holy, EDIT BEFORE YOU POST.

#8. Getting keyboard brave:

This one is pretty basic, if you wouldn’t say it in real life please refrain from typing and posting it on social media.

#9. You constantly complain:

Every once and a while it’s normal to whine about different things going on in your life or in the world in general. But if every other post is another grievance you have then you may want to rethink the way you’re utilizing your social media.

#10. Taking what others say at face value:

We all have our own biases and opinions and regardless of what other people think, the whole point of social media is to express yourself. So for the most part, do and say what you would like in a responsible way, and try not to worry too much what other people think of you.
